I should be cataloging

But I'd rather be blogging. So this will be just a quick post, and then it's back to homework.
What do you do with knits you don't have much use for? I admit to being rather reckless when it comes to things that have outlived their purpose or aren't quite right. They're either frogged, given to someone who will love them more than I do, or passed on to Goodwill. That is how this blanket came to be:
Garter Stitch Blanket 1
It once was this:
Flicca7
Was that a gasp I heard?
My Flicca was lovely, but except for the photoshoot and one other time I never wore it. It was just a bit too heavy and cumbersome and sat neatly folded in my sweater drawer for a good year or so. Between two humans and a cat, we had only one wool blanket in the house (so you can guess who got to use that blanket) and another was desperately needed. Frogging went rather quickly without any pangs of regret, and in about a month I had a big almost 6'x5' garter stitch blanket with a scalloped crochet border. I've used it a lot and feel so happy every time I do.
Lesson learned: People use yarn with acrylic for a reason: it's lighter than 100% wool. I'll remember that next time I feel like knitting a coat again.

Wow. You are amazing! To frog that beautiful sweater and never look back. But it is true. Sometimes I look at my handknits and I have to admit, I don't really wear them enough.

wow! i feel for you. the blanket is lovely!!! it's all about using what you make. i have quite a few knitted items sitting in my closet. i might do the same, too.

No gasp - I would have done the same. The yarn was a gorgeous as a coat, and now is a gorgeous blanket.

Arg! The blanket looks lovely, but I mourn the Flicca, especially since I am in the middle of knitting my own Flicca from exactly the same yarn, totally inspired by your original Flicca post! I'm concerned myself about the coat being too warm, although it's snowing and below freezing where I live right now and the concept of "too warm" seems crazy. Oh, well. Maybe my Flicca will meet a similar fate in a year or so!

The blanket is lovely; I hope it gets more use than the Flicca!

Um yes, I gasped, that was me. ;) Flicca was certainly beautiful, but if you weren't going to use it, better to rip and knit something you will use. And the blanket looks just as beautiful!

i did gasp. a big one. i love flicca, and seeing yours was the reason i decided to really learn how to knit (i still have not made it though:)) but, i totally get what you are saying, I do the same thing. i hate to see things laying around that do not get any use. I am so glad you made a blanket out of it, and use it all the time now. you can always knit another flicca with a different yarn.
I have to frog a knit that i worked really hard on because the it just doesn't fit me anymore, and I never wear it. that is the beauty of knitting!

Yup, much used and much loved is better than just being beautiful :) Glad you're happy with it - at the end of the day, that's what matters right ? :)

I would like to delurk and say hurrah for two reasons.

1. Hurrah for making lemonade from lemons! There's no reason for it to languish, and now you're warm.

2. Hurrah for daring to mention acrylic has good uses. I'm a yarn omnivore and believe almost all yarn and fibers have a time and place, especially in blends.

I won't lie, I gasped too. Your Flicca is(was) one of my all time favourites. But I completely understand your decision. I've been itching to frog a few of my own projects to the dismay of my knitterly friends. But if you're not going to wear it, what's the point? This way, you got double pleasure out of the yarn.

And besides, that blanket it gorgeous!

Gasped, yes, but just because I instantly admired your decisiveness. To be so honest to accept your Flicca just isn't yours takes a lot. But all the better you transformed it into this gorgeous, cozy blanket!
This is just so cool.
This project keeps being inspiring a LOT.

I know what you mean... I never wear my Lady Eleanor, made out of super scratchy Kureyon. However, I do not have the strength to frog it! You are strong :)

Gasp is right! You have such fortitude to frog that fantastic coat. But it turned into a fantastic blanket!

I did gasp. But yummy yarn should be used for something awesome. I admit to admiring Flicca for a long time. One of the few times that I pulled DH into the room to see something fabulous online. Thanks for sharing.

Of course my finished Flicca was not as perfect as yours I frogged it too. Maybe we just don´t have the right climate to wear this lovely thing - yours too hot, mine too cold :-)))
Congrats to your great blanket!!!

Ok, I have to admit to a little gasp...yet...I found this post to be extremely empowering! To be able to accept that the yarn wanted to be something else, and then to do it, I'm impressed! :)

Omagosh yes, that was me gasping. I loved your Flicca. In fact, I ordered the pattern right after I saw your post. But on the other hand, your new blanket is beautiful!

you go! there's nothing worse that having a knit languish away in a drawer. i'm glad to hear that you frogged it and made something usable out of it :)

Good for you! I feel like people hold onto things because they are scared to take the plunge. The purpose is to enjoy it. I'm sure it will be more loved now.

Here's to fearless frogging!

too funny! i, also, have been pondering frogging my flicca as i have only worn it once too. it's a bit too long and swingy for me...hmmm...

Your flica was gorgeous! But if you aren't using it then (even though it isn't fun sometimes) we have the lovely ability to reuse our yarn and move on to something we will get use out of it. So cheers to your beautiful blanket.

no more hiding! i remember how i gasped when you first told me :P of course, the new blanket is wonderful and will be a great knit for many many years.

Believe it or not every so often I go to my bookmarks where Flicca was saved. And I would stare and stare and marvel at its beauty. Then I would fantasize about when I would make it, and stand on the beach wearing it.. oh and look like a model like you did wearing it! I gasped, I cried.. I guess I'll just really have to make my own now. :)

I gasped a little bit, but I have to admit that I would probably use a blanket more than the jacket (though it was very beautiful!).

Flicca WAS lovely, but if you weren't using it...

The blanket is beautiful and functional, so I think you made a great decision :)

Don't know if my previous comment reached you. Simply wanted to say:

I have to admit that I did gasp...That was a lovely jacket! But what's the point of having it if it's no going to be put to good use :) I'm glad you are enjoying your blanket!!!

Your brave to frog that. It's lovely as both. I bet it makes a better blanket due to it weight.
